Merlin Mann on Nirvana’s Nevermind:
Nevermind’s production hasn’t aged well. Any more compression on that sucker, and it would really sound like fucking Boston.
I wish someone would give Steve Albini a long weekend with the original tapes. I’ll bet he could restore some dynamic range and, ironically, make the record sound even huger. It deserves a modern, Vig-less remix.
(Man, imagine if Albini had recorded the original drums — the mind reels)
— merlinI agree 110%. Like a lot of my peers, Nevermind was my introduction to the band. My angst-ridden adolescent ears loved this shit. These days, though… enh. I’d go so far as to say that it’s the anti-grunge album. Everything’s so glossy, so punchy. Where’s the murky, consumer-grade-gear rage that still makes Bleach so more compelling to my ears?
