I don’t listen to music anymore, too mainstream. The place I go , the DJ mixes cuts off NPR, a little “Fresh Air” a little “All things considered”. Shit is bangin. Every time my jam comes on I am like WHOOP SWAG! via metafilter.com Posted via email from zerrissenheit. | Comment »

Polinski - "Labyrinths". So excited.
At the risk of sounding hyperbolic (oh, come on, it’s the Internet), this is already in my personal list for Album of the Year, possibly Decade, and it’s not even out yet. Truth is I’ve been listening to this mega-mix pretty much nonstop the past couple of days and it has everything I could possibly want from music. I’m planning on writing an actual review of the album...

Distance
I still remember when I heard this for the first time. 100% Fun had just come out, and like a lot of 90s teenagers, I ran out on release day and picked it up. Thanks to MTV, I already knew how kick-ass “Sick of Myself” was (mentioned previously) and so I eagerly awaited hearing the rest of the album. And there I was, doing some evening chores and occasionally catching a glimpse of the liner...

Better than their name would suggest: iLiKETRAiNS...
Let’s get it out of the way first: I don’t like their name, and while they’ve thankfully moved beyond the begging-to-be-bracketed-by-xXes “iLiKETRAiNS” styling to simply “I Like Trains”, their name just sounds dumb.  Still, they’ve been a minor obsession of mine the past few days, and what I believe they get right far outweighs what they get wrong...

You guys, I think I leveled up.
Record Store Day was pretty great. I stood in line for about an hour, but my line mates were an affable bunch so the time passed pretty smoothly. The rain was an issue though. Thankfully, I had tents and awnings to stand under when the worst of it hit. Inevitable disappointment: not getting Queen’s “Keep Yourself Alive” 7”. Dang, I wanted it so bad, you guys. Glasnost: Test if your ISP is shaping your traffic
The goal of the Glasnost project is to make ISPs’ traffic shaping policies transparent to their customers. To this end, we designed Glasnost tests that enable you to check whether traffic from your applications is being rate-limited (i.e., throttled) or blocked. via broadband.mpi-sws.org Incredibly useful, since you know the ISPs sure as Hell aren’t going to tell you...

On Opeth and Scariness
Opeth is about as scary as a teddy bear propped beside a bubblebath. And no, not an old tattered teddy bear missing an eye and matted with what might be dried blood. A cheerful, innocent teddy bear, perhaps with a heart-shaped doily on its furry little chest. That smells of cinnamon. And no, the tub isn’t filled with blood or bile or creepy greenish-black ichor or anything like that....

One verse for the fallen-down
My wife and I were out running errands last night — well, she was, and I was set to wander in an exhausted, Klonopin-blurred fog.  I encountered the Sir Ed’s sign and I was taken a bit aback. You see, Sir Ed’s closed a few months ago.  Its closing was announced abruptly; there was scarcely time to get the word out before its final night.  All the locals did what is...

Matthew Sweet - Sick of Myself
Before I went on the Great Electronic Music Bender (1996-2003 or thereabouts), and before the snake ate its own tail and tastes veered hopelessly into post-[whatever], my rock’n’roll hero was Matthew Sweet.  There’s something about him that others haven’t matched.  His stuff didn’t try to be coy or arch like a lot of today’s self-deprecating rockers are, and...

A lovely day for a walk
I feel as though this week Is the last I’ll have before Summer finally settles in and slow-roasts us for the next few months.
